Clodie François aka Mesdames Carton is a French native, born in Paris. She was early involved with theater, her first passion, on stage and backstage as a play writer, director, actress and singer. She also worked as a journalist for the newspaper Liberation. When she settled in New Mexico in 2000, this self taught artist began to create whimsical design furniture & one-of-a -kind sculptural lamps, merging hybrid material. The combination of corrugated cardboard, recycle wood or Masonite, willow branches and acid free handmade paper from all around the world is the particular signature of her work.
Her functional pieces convey an alchemy between the flexibility of one material and the rigidity of the other, between the light and colors of the Land of Enchantment and her own personality .
Whether they serve to shape the bold outlines of an insolent chest of drawer, a seductive night stand or a fairy like lamp, her creations vibrate with a subtle and playful elegance.
Clodie has exhibited at Taos Home Grown, Arte de Descartes, the Santa Fe Recycled Show, Casa Nova by Natalie in Santa Fe and Taos Fine Art & Framing in Taos. Her work has also been featured in the Tempo and the Santa Fean magazines.
Clodie’s creations are currently exhibited at Taos Art Collective in Taos & at Gaucho Blue in Penasco.
Her studio is open for the annual High Road Art Tour in September and all year round on appointment.

I am from Espanola. I got into willow work by learning to make chairs. My teacher, Michael Emmons from Big Sur. CA taught in early 2000 at a school in Rockland, ME. A couple years later I apprenticed with Lorenzo Armijo from Pena Blanca, a small community near Cochiti, south of Santa Fe. He taught me the more Spanish style of basketry known as Madeira. Later on I met Bob Allalunis of Taos. He showed me another style of basketry called Moises. I have also studied the styles of various pueblo basket makers from San Juan, Santa Clara and Hopi who really emphasize more beauty and perfection. My work leans more on the practical rustic style. It all started after tiring of tossing broken plastic laundry baskets away.
